handbrake crashes in 10.8.5

I recently updated from 10.8.3 to 10.8.5, and now handbrake crashes anytime I try to scan the source media, before I can even start encoding. I updated to the most recent handbrake (0.9.9), same issue...anyone else have the same problem or find a workaround?
