Hey all, I thought I would post this up for anyone who was interested. I am trying a few different steps to encode video from a DVD using HandBreak for my old 5G iPod at 640x480.

I ripped directly from the DVD using the settings illustrated below. The video is actually 640x352 because of its wide screen nature.

The resulting video was 291.1MB and played fine in both iTunes and on the iPod. As you can see from the second picture the video has moderate to severe artifacting. (pic below) I assume it is because of the bitrate. I am going to up the bitrate for the next rip I do and will report my findings back.

Any questions or comments let me know.

If it was me, I'd turn that bitrate way, way up - the latest iPod software supports MPEG-4 at up to 2.5 Mb/s (and H.264 at 1.5 Mb/s).

Very cool, I wonder when we'll see an updated Instant Handbrake? I would think it won't be too tricky.
