Hey new to Handbrake on the Mac - I've been using it on a PC coupled with DVDDecryptor. After reading the documentation for Handbrake I noticed that if you have VLC installed you can (supposedly) encode from Handbrake directly from the DVD.

After trying this with the first DVD it produced a .m4v that contains the entire movie but the quality is unwatchable - blocks everywhere and just poor video. I only used the default iPhone preset and didn't change anything.

Went through the Handbrake output and found this error many times:

GUI ERROR dialog: dvd: DVDReadBlocks failed (20780), skipping to vobu 1735279894
[19:06:14] Warning: Could not read data for preview 6, skipped
[19:06:14] dvd: Read Error on blk 13241, attempt 0
[19:06:14] dvd: Read Error on blk 13241, attempt 1
[19:06:14] dvd: Read Error on blk 13241, attempt 2
[19:06:14] dvd: vobu read error blk 13241 - skipping to cell 1

Any help?

What are you going to watch the video on? iPhone, TV, QuickTime? Choosing the most appropriate preset will make a big difference.

If you look at the actual numbers for the iPhone preset they are quite low quality but they max out what can be done on the iPhone given the number of pixels for its display.

Solved the problem - I was using an older version of VLC which didn't have the correct decrypting library. Updated VLC to the latest and everything is working.
