I am logged in under a different ( old name ) because I was just using firefox, and it froze up on me.... So, I restarted my computer, and Firefox and Handbrake are missing from my dock. VLC is still here, as is the one other program I installed.

Using Safari, my user name is now in red, and I can't log in.

I am a mac noob. I just got my mac mini about 10 days ago.

Any thoughts on what I can or should do?

No Virus. I only visited 4 total sites so far. Apple, Youtube, Wiki, and my fantasy baseball site that I have been using for 7 years.

Have you looked in the Applications folder or even in the Trash, if your programs are there?

The Dock is just like the taskbar (not really) in that it holds aliases to the software you currently use or to applications you put in there yourself.
If they are missing from the dock, they most probably aren't removed from the Applications folder.

Also, there are no known viruses for Mac OS X. Trojans and Malware yes, but only on pornsites (wants to install an active x codec) or in pirated software distributed via torrents.

Do you have different users on your Mac Mini? Automatic login activated?

Just me on it....

I did NOT check the trash. VCL is still in applications, but the other 2 were missing. I re-downloaded both. Handbrake I put on the dock AGAIN, and now it is not there, AGAIN. Firefox stayed. ( for now ).

Definitely no porn sites. I have a crappy PC laptop for that. :D

Nothing downloaded except Handbrake, VCL, and my DJ software ( megaseg - a trusted site )

I don't mean to be condescending or anything, but are you placing the applications in the Applications folder? New Mac users tend to open the disk image (.dmg) and open the app from there. They forget to place it in the Applications folder and when they restart the expanded .dmg unmounts and it looks like they lost their applications.

I think so, but I will check. Thanks.

This is probably what you did. Make sure you drag the app to the applications folder, and THEN drag the app (from applications) to the dock to make an alias.

There is no worry of getting a virus. You can lose the paranoia that came with being a PC user.
