Handbrake stops

Just installed handbrake and it doesn't detect VLC (even though its installed) when converting it doesn't complete the job although it doesn't crash either it just stays the same way with no percentage progress usually around 4%.

Any ideas?

Running Snow Leopard 10.6.7
