Handbrake to macbook then ipod?

Does anyone know if I use handbrake to rip a dvd for viewing on my macbook, can I then use handbrake again to convert the file for viewing on my ipod without having the original DVD?

I know I can view the file on my ipod anyway, but is it possible to alter it using handbrake to reduce the file size by reducing picture and sound quality for ipod playback?

You can just use iTunes to convert it to the iPhone format. Right-click it and Format for iPhone.
