I have a G4 Digital Audio 466Mhz with 512MB RAM. I would like to be able to use h.264 encoding on Handbrake at a reasonable speed. It doesn't have to be realtime, but it would be nice to be able to rip a 90 minute segment in 3-5 hours. Currently it would take something like 24+ so I have to use plain MPEG4.
My goal is really just for faster encoding with Handbrake and good playback on the files it creates. What's the most cost effective way to do this, without buying another machine? I don't know if Handbrake is SMP enabled, so I would be willing to put down $300 for a 1.4 G4 w/ 2MB Cache. I suppose that's 1/2 way to a Mac mini, but I'd rather pocket the difference for now and wait for a "Mac Pro" and use this to hold me over.
In any case, what are your suggestions?
