It's happened about twice now in the past week... well, 3 things that might be related
(2009 imac w applecare, never had a prob)
-frequently/always getting a "application cancelled shutdown/logout" message--doesn't say what app
-won't wake up from sleep
-boot from a hard shutdown following not waking up, stops at the spinner/apple logo... i've waited as long as 10 min at this point

when i get the spinner (black, not beachball) i have always been able to restore things with a safe boot and then going back.

I'm not sure if there is any correlation between the times i get the first message and click cancel on my time machine backup, but don't know why that would be affecting things in the first place.

from what i have read about the boot process, getting stuck on the spinner most likely points to a problem with the osx install.

Disk Utility always says my permissions are out, even right after i fix them, too.

since i don't have a lion disc and don't want to spend a lot of time on this, can i just leave it alone until 10.8 is out? My guess is no, but i have no idea what has happened. I do have applecare, but no car to easily get it to an apple store.
