A - There's a trigger in the software that makes the iPhone bail on a call when the registered signal quality falls below a set threshold. The "corrected" signal indicator scheme will somehow hopefully affect this and allow the phone to hold a call better.

B - There is a problem and this is an attempt to placate those who just observe signal loss without any change in call quality. Also those those antsy about something being wrong with the iPhone 4. Those still affected by call quality problems after the fix will be quietly dealt with through AppleCare. Perhaps a band coating, plastic SIM tray, pixie dust, etc.

I have several unhappy thoughts, but I'm keeping it positive going into the holiday weekend...
