Hey there guys,

as we are approaching the preorder window, I was asking myself if there will be some specific software improvements coming with iOS 13 concerning Haptic Touch.
I own an iPhone X and consider myself a heavy 3D touch user. I've heard that the peek and pop feature and the moving-the-cursor-in-texts-feature by hardpressing the space bar have been removed with the introduction of Haptic Touch in the XR last year. Any chance this is coming back with iOS13?

Greetings

You will get most of the 3D Touch functionality with haptic touch in iOS 13. It will just be slower since haptic touch is just a long press with a fancy marketing name. Here are the changes:
  • Long pressing on a home screen icon now brings up the quick action menus on any device, iPhone or iPad, 3D Touch or not. These menus now have a “Rearrange Apps” option to put the icons into wiggle mode since that used to be the behavior of a long press.
  • Pressing the space bar to move the cursor was actually introduced in iOS 12 to make it so that XR users could have that feature. On 3D Touch devices, you could force touch anywhere on the keyboard to enter trackpad mode. On all new iPhones, long pressing the space bar will be your only option to move the cursor this way. It’s not quite as good since starting at the space bar doesn’t leave you much room to move the cursor down. iOS 13 does offer you another option in this area though. You can tap and hold on the cursor itself and then drag it wherever.
  • Long pressing on emails, web links, etc. brings up a (modified) peek view on all devices now. But pop is completely gone (even on 3D Touch devices). You have to lift your finger to tap on the peek preview to jump into whatever is being previewed. There are still quick actions in peek view but you also have to lift your finger to tap on these as well. You can no longer peek and then slide your finger down to the quick actions in a single motion. Similarly, things like peeking a new mail and then sliding left or right for more options is gone too. Overall I’m ok with this change. It’s definitely not as good as 3D Touch, but most of the functionality is still there. And, it works on iPad as well.
So, most of the 3D Touch functionality is replicated with haptic touch in iOS 13. It’s just not quite as good since everything is now being driven by a long press, which, by definition, takes longer to do.

Wow, thank you for the absolute detailed information. I can now see that I didn't even notice all the features 3D touch had to offer. Anyway, after reading your information, it's not as a big concern as it has been before.

Thanks again!
