Hello,
I would like to replace the hard-disk of my MBP 15" Alu, from a 120GB to something bigger (and possibly faster).

I need suggestions on 2 topics: 1) which disks to choose, and 2) how to migrate my stuff to the new one seamlessly.

1) Is there a compatibility-list for potential hd replacements?
Since SDD are too expensive to get reasonable sizes, I'm looking for classical disks.
I found as candidate a "WD Scorpio Black, 7200rpm, 16MB, 2.5, 500GB, SATA-II": would this be a good choice?

2) Once I get the new disk, how do I install it in the lapton, and how to migrate everything to the new system, possibly without re-installing the whole system?

Thanks for any suggestion,
Valerio

1. Scorpio Black is a good choice, it's the fastest laptop drive.

2. Get a 2.5" enclosure for the HD, put it in, use CCC to clone and do the swap.

1) ANY 2.5'' sata-II drive under 12.5mm thick will work.

2) You will need to either use time machine or an equivalent, either way you'll be reinstalling OS X.

Take a look at the Seagate Momentus XT.

I just installed it in my 2007 MBP and it's certainly speeded up the boot and app loading.

I recently replaced the stock drive on my 2010 15" MBP with a WD Scorpio Black 750 GB and it went super smooth. I bought it from OWC as a kit. It came with everything I needed (drive, tools, external enclosure for the old drive). Now I'm using the old drive for a simple backup solution as an external usb drive.
