Alright I have an external hard drive in a random enclosure, and I am not sure as to whether the hard drive is ATA or SATA. Is there a way I can tell without taking it out of the enclosure? The enclosure does not specify what it is. Thanks!

Go into disk utility after you mount it, and click on it. It should tell you what the interface is at the bottom. I'd guess it's a ATA, since you aren't sure. SATA externals are expensive, and you'd know it if you had one.

Don't think Disk Utility will tell you this information on an external drive.

Agree with you that is is probably a ATA drive.

The OP could check the web for info on the drive. The manufacture may list this information.
