I had my hard drive crash and had to replace it - I had a backup of all my fonts - after reinstalling them and getting suitcase set back up - about 75% of my fonts aren't working now - they are showing up as a xml documents instead of postscript or truetype - am I being stupid - have I done something wrong? I have tried putting them in my system font folder and they still won't work.

No you are not being stupid, fonts are one of the most sensitive beings on the planet. I would advise running FontDoctor or the type to rebuild the library before letting Suitcase tell you the world is ended!
