FireWire 1.5 TB

2 days ago my internal 500gb boot drive appeared to fail. It would not boot. I booted from a backup on one of the FireWire drives. Disk utility reported that the internal drive could not be repaired. I tried reformatting and restoring with no luck. Ordered a replacement drive and am waiting for it now.

HERE IS WHERE IT GETS WEIRD....

I booted again from the FireWire back up and set it as the startup disk. I scanned all connected drives with Sophos. Everything seemed to be working.

When I restarted again a day later, I get the flashing question mark.

I option key into my second back up and startup from it. The first FireWire back up partition is unmounted and now named something like 4ds2k. I can't mount it. My only option is to erase it and repartition it...

I am down to my last back up and afraid to restart. HELP,
