Well I found out on my 2.4 aluminum macbook that what i once thought was the fan making the noise was actually the hard drive making the fan like noise. Now if i place my palm right over where the hard drive is, the noise diminishes. Does anyone else face the same thing? You have to be in a quiet room.

don't think this is a common issue. might be some defect internally with the
drive itself (barring issue on the rotating discs)

does it affect performance of running applications? do they seem to slow down or crash?

doesn't hurt to take it to the apple store. might save you grief later on down the road...

Pop off the bottom case cover, and make sure the screws holding the hard drive in place are tightened properly.

If that doesn't fix the issue, swing by an Apple store and see if they can help you out.
