hard drive format recommendations

having purchased a Western Digital MyBook 500GB harddrive last week only to have it die on me within a few days, i decided to go with a seagate drive this time instead. Anyway, I'm wondering what format (MS-DOS, Extended, Extended ) if any is recommended--should i reformat it before i start? I'm not planning on using it as a boot disk, just media back up.

If you're using it strictly on your Mac, format it in Mac OS Extended (HFS+).
