Hard Drive Has Vanished!!

I have 2 internal drives in my 876Mhz G4. The main drive has been clicking noisily for a long while, so I installed Tiger on the backup drive, hoping to remove the defective drive.

Tiger installed perfectly on the backup drive and when I restarted, it booted up from this drive too.

So I shut down, opened the case intending to remove the defective main drive. It's bolted beneath the backup drive and I have no idea how to get it out. So instead I changed the jumper settings on the backup drive to "main". While I was at it I unplugged the IDE connector from the failing main drive. I then rebooted.

The mac wouldn't start up. I kept getting a small blue folder flashing on the screen.

So I put everything back how it was.

It booted up. But from the defective MAIN DRIVE! And when it was done it failed to show my backup drive in the Finder.

Disk repair doesn't show the backup drive either.

It's vanished!

So I reinstalled Tiger onto the defective main drive in the hope that something positive would come of it (the drive clicks constantly), but alas, once rebooted my backup drive still won't show up.

Any suggestions?
