Show these items on the desktop - uncheck hard disks.
 
Better yet. Drap your hard drive to your dock, near the trash, as in to the right of the line divider. Then right click on the icon to access it. Or hold click. You can also do this with your home directory or any folder. Especially helpful if you want access to those folders only for a short time. When you don't want them in the dock anymore. Drag them off and poof. And to access them in a finder window just do a regular click. But by right clicking you can then select the file or app you want and that opens without still having a finder window open on your desktop.
