Hi all,

On a macbook pro laptop - mid 2012/2013, I pressed the power button for 5 seconds while the system was running and it obviously shut down
but then I when I tried to restart, it fails to recognize the hard disk

I pulled out the Hard disk and connected to a USB enclosure and rebooted the system (with no internal drive, drive connected to USB port), it rebooted just fine.

I am at a loss as to how to fix it.

Sounds like the drive cable is bad. Not as common as drive failures, but it does happen. iFixit sells them for a few bucks.
