Kansas but miss Colorado
Hey everyone. I use this site all the time and figured I should become a member and start helping others out too.

I took the 320gb HD out of my directv DVR and put it in my mac. It is a WD 320 gb sata drive that works as far as I know. The problem is that disk utility recognizes it as simply "media" and i cannot format it or read anything on it. I am not worried about anything on the drive I just want to use it as a drive on my mac.

If anyone has any insights that would be fantastic.

Have a good one.

Mac Pro Dual 3.0 Quad core, 8 gb RAM

I guess i cant really check the permissions on it because all i can do is see that it is in disk utility.

I attached two screen captures of what I am looking at. The drive that concerns me is the one called "Media"
When I have it selected it will not allow me to do anything with it but it is there.
Would it be a good idea to pop it in my pc and format it there?

Are you able to partition or do anything with your other drives? It's seems odd that even the 'Info' button is greyed out.

I put it in a pc and it would not come up at all. I trust disk utility above any pc program. I think the drive is shot and it is a lost cause or there is a lock of some kind.
Anyway, I appreciate all your help in the matter and will post any new adventures in the future.

Anybody need a directv dvr without a hard drive?

My guess would be that the drive is jumpered in a manner that causes this behavior - total guess here, but worth a shot.

Go to the manufacturers web site and see if there are jumper settings. If there are none, could be a custom firmware applied.

My two cents...
