hard drive issues with new extreme

When I plug my Maxtor harddrive into my new extreme it works wirelessly for a short time and then I get a disconnection error after a few minutes. When I first connected the drive it worked without any issues however the problem appears to becoming more frequent. Does anyone know why and what I can do to fix it? Could it be that my USB hard drive is not compatable?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry to sound like an idiot but what does that mean and is there anything I can do to stop it?
