this is a hard drive in my second bay in my 2011 MBP, the drive says its failing but the only partition on the drive says the volume is ok any one with experience why the drive would say its failing but the partition would scan as OK

You may want to read out extended smart status based on one of the tools discussed here: http://apple.stackexchange.com/ques...t-disk-information-on-os-x-mavericks-or-later
That said, if you house any data on that drive, get it OFF! Disk utility is typically too late in diagnosing bad drives, so that one is certainly a goner.
