I have just installed a new hard drive on an iMac G5.
Old one: West Dig 250GB
New one: West Dig 1TB
Everything is working great EXCEPT: the heat sensor attached to the old HD bracket won't work. When it's plugged in, the computer refuses to start, even when the drive is stone cold. The white power light on the bezel comes on, and after 15 secs the fan comes on in overdrive. The screen stays black.
It's behaving like an overheat shutdown, even when the machine has been left off all night and the drive is cold.
Leaving it unplugged, the computer works just fine, but I'm worried about operating without a heat sensor on my hard drive. Do I need to fix this, and if so, how?
I have already tried zapping the Parameter RAM and the SMU.
