Hard Drive sharing Question

I am not sure if this will work, and I don't know enough of the terms to search for what I need, so...

I have a macbook and an airport extreme with a external hard drive attached to it. THe Airdisk function does not work very well. I am getting a new imac in a few weeks and would like to connect my external hard drives to the imac and share the contents over my network. Does this work well? The airdisk is not reliable at all, I hope I don't have this problem with the imac.

I know that time machine does not work with the airdisk, can I get it to work with a drive attached to the imac?---for my macbook, I know it will work with the imac.
