So I will probably pick up a PS4 somewhat soon, provided I can even find one. Now, from what I hear, even the retail disc-based games take up ridiculous amounts of space on the hard drive, so I should probably look into replacing the 500GB one right away. Is there a known maximum capacity that the PS4 can handle? Can I throw a 3TB drive in there?

Your limitation is a 2.5" SATA drive at no more than 9.5mm thickness- in other words, standard dimensions for a laptop drives. As far as I know this maxes you out at 2TB. Higher capacity drives exist but because they have additional platters they're generally much thicker (up to 15mm), and even the 2TB drives are quite pricey.

Thanks for the info.

Maybe it would be best to stick with the 500GB hd as long as I can, and wait for the price/capacities of hard drives to go down/up in the meantime.

I'm waiting for the 2tb drive to be supported by sony.
People have been using it but currently freezes at times.
