If one were to do a clean install of a macbook air or macbook pro of just Leopard how much space would be taken up on the hard drive? Thanks

That completely depends on which additional languages, additional language fonts, print drivers, iLife applications, and components of iLife applications you choose to remove as part of the process.

the general requirements stated by Apple say that 9 GB of space is needed to install, so this implies a full Leopard install is about this size. the MacBook Air's 80 GB hard disk is ~75 GB when formatted so that leaves 66 GB of free space left.

of course you can cut down the size of a Leopard install by a few gigs by omitting extra languages, printer drivers, fonts and not installing the Garage Band loops if you wont be using them. this can be done by selecting "custom install" in the Leopard installer.
