I was wondering if it was safe to simply switch the stock hard drive in the new 2011 macbook pro for my current hard drive in my 2010 macbook pro.

My worry isnt the HDD (because it is compatible) but the drives that should be included in the changes i.e. radeon GPU, etc.

Will the system cross check and update this or do I have to perform a backup via time machine or cloner.

There may be drivers etc that are not present on your old drive. With such a new machine like this it is hard to say. I would clone the drive if it were me.
