Hey guys,

I'm having some major problems with my RAID 5 set up, and I thought one of you might have a solution. I have a 3-month old OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2, with four 2TB HDDs.

Last night, the drive disconnected randomly and is now not reading properly on my computer. When I plug it in I get this error:

'The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.' 'Initialize, Ignore, Eject'

There is crucial information on this drive, since it's in a RAID 5 configuration, I'm assuming that the hardware is OK, and this is a directory problem. However, the drive is not showing up in Diskwarrior, and First Aid is grayed out in Disk Utility (It appears as a 6TB External RAID).

Can anyone suggest anything I can do to fix this device?

Thanks,
Adam

Any Solution?

Hello,

I'm having the same exact issue. OWC Mercury Qx2 with 4x2TB Hitachi drives installed connected via eSata to a 2xQuad Core 2.26GHZ Mac Pro.

FCP froze and I had to do a hard reset. When I rebooted, I got the "the disc you inserted is not recognized" message. The drive isn't recognized by DiscWarrior, and Disk Utility won't let me run any repairs either.

I have 95% of the data on a clone RAID 5 setup, so it's not a complete disaster if I have to wipe this one, but would rather save this one if at all possible.

What did you end up doing, Adam? Thanks.

If you can't mount the volume, you won't be able to repair it. I would point Data Rescue at it, you should get all your info back. It's always worth trying to connect it to another computer, especially if you have one with a different Mac OS, i.e. Leopard instead of Snow Leopard.

Some drives don't like being in RAIDs, I had a pair of Seagate Barracuda 1.5 TB drives that seemed to work fine everywhere except in RAID setups. Although if you both are having similar issues with the same RAID box, it might be time to talk to the manufacturer...

Same Problem

I'm having the same exact problem as the two initial posters, but this time with a LaCie 2Big Quadra drive (4TB) configured in RAID 1. I'm not even sure what caused the problem -- the drive never lost power, and was never disconnected without being ejected first.

Regardless of what caused the problem -- has anyone found a solution? To repeat the problem:

- When the drive is connected, the computer gives the message: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. Initialize? Ignore? Eject?"

- The first aid options are greyed out in Disk Utility

- DiskWarrior won't recognize the drive (presumably because it's not mounting), and therefore can't seem to repair it.

Any help would be incredibly appreciated!
