I have a PNY SSD. All of a sudden I can't really write anything to it. I've reformatted it in multiple formats and my Mac and iPad will see it, but when I go to write anything to it, the progress bar/circle doesn't do anything. Originally I was moving a lot of files so I thought maybe it got too hot, but just now I tried one image and it's doing the same thing. Any suggestions? (Not a primary back up drive or anything. I just used it to move files around)

I will assume this an USB3 external drive. I will assume you are formatting the drive when attached to your Mac. What file system format are you choosing when reformatting?

All correct. Last time I tried AFPS (I believe is what it’s called) I’ve also tried the other apple option I’m drawing a blank on the name.

I've read that sometimes when an SSD fails, it will fail into "read-only" mode.

I've never experienced that myself -- I've had two SSD failures, and in both cases the drives "went dark", never to be seen again.

Here's a quick trick to try.
It may help -- or it may do nothing.
1. connect the drive
2. let the icon mount on the desktop
3. click ONE TIME on the icon to select it
4. bring up the "get info" box (type command-i)
5. at the bottom of get info, click the lock and enter your password
6. put a check into "ignore ownership on this volume" (sharing and permissions)
7. close get info.

NOW try to write something to the drive.
Do things improve?
(again, no promises).

Was this drive a "ready to use" (all assembled) drive?
Or did you buy a "bare drive" and put it into an enclosure?

If the drive can be removed from its enclosure (not all can without destroying the drive), take it out and try another enclosure.

If nothing helps, I'm wondering if it could have "failed into read-only mode"...

It was a ready to use drive. I tried what you suggested and oddly the drive was locked. I unlocked it and was able to copy a folder (small files) When I tried to copy a large folder (images) it started and just froze as soon as the status bar popped up.

When I tried this it was already locked so I unlocked it and was able to copy small files, when I tried larger files (images) it froze right when it was calculating how long it will take and didn't move. I'm guessing its failed.
