ok, so i just got my iphone a week ago, and my sfari was quiting and going back to the home page, so i read online about holding the home key to "force quit" apps, and also about holding the sleep button and home button for a hard reset, I did both of these and safari still quits back to home, but only when i am trying to access a media intensive sight.

so my question is do force quits and hard resets hurt the iphone at all? I know they are not recomended, and that alone is making me feel bad for doing it, as funny as that sounds.

I do them all the time and everything is fine with my iPhone. I have not heard that they hurt the phone in any way. Safari quits on media intensive sites for the same reason Final Cut, Motion, Logic and other big apps quit on a low power machine. Because there's not enough resources.
