iPod Harddrive crashed

My harddrive with all my mp3s crashed and I had to reformat. I lost all of my mp3s but most of them are on my ipod mini so I wasn't too worried. I went to the apple store to ask about what I can do to make backups of my ipod mp3s and they told me they can't and I should have kept them on a harddrive. Wasn't the reponse I was looking for. Can you guys offer any suggestions?

For Macs: Senuti (iTunes backwards ).

For PCs: enable hidden files and drag/drop back onto hard drive.

Remember not to let iTunes update the iPod on either platform though, and Hard Drive Usage must be enabled from the iPod preferences.
