Harddrive issue

Most importantly this laptop has a failing hard drive. In disk utility it tells me to back up as the hard drive is failing. It has an 80GB hard drive and I upgraded the RAM to 1.2MB a few years ago

Also I have the optical drive failing

Is their anyway to get around this and repair ? Or should I throw laptop away

You can replace the HDD, no need to throw it away.
As the HDD is failing, back up your important data, buy a new HDD and install Mac OS X onto it.

I don't know, you have to search yourself for a 2.5" S-ATA HDD with a maximum height of 9.5 mm, as the guide explained.
500 GB should cost less than 100 quid.
