Oh, I am soooo pissed right now. I have an 80 GB drive (74,5). Yesterday I had 6 GB free space, so I decided to burn some stuff on DVD and remove it from the drive. I managed to free up 4 GB, leaving me with 10 GB. I put my Mac to sleep, woke it up, surfed a bit and now it shows that I have just 8 GB left.
I already emptied the trashcan and repaired privileges.

I checked all the visible folders in my Home Directory, they have a total of 46,1 GB in them. Curiously enough, Panther shows just above 50 GB for the Users directory, but I am the only user and I sure hope that there can't be that many hidden files. But it gets even worse: All the folders in / (Applications, Users, Library, ...) make up a total of 60 GB - but Disk Utility claims that I have used 68 GB.

I don't know whether that accounts for Virtual Memory, but even including it (5,7 GB) leaves two GB.

I think with Panther I could even fill 1TB.

*confused*

I've been having the same problem lately. I don't know what causes it, but I've found that restarting gets back the space for some reason.

to find your disk usage the best way is to go the terminal and type

cd /
sudo du -h -d 1 *

that will give you the disk usage for all the dir in the root
