This is my first post here and I would like to thank all of the knowledgeable people for what I have gleaned in the past.
I have a late 2011 MBP 13" 8.1 running Lion 10.7.5 11G63 with 8 GB of RAM. I have been backpacking in South America for the past 15 months and the machine has been excellent. Today I dropped it on concrete from a height of about 4'.The machine was off, closed and fell out out of the bag I carry it in. It landed on the right rear corner, bent the aluminum on the lid slightly but no other damage. Everything seems to work as before- I am using it now.
I would like to run the hardware diagnostic but according to what instructions I have, one holds down the D key when starting. When I do this , the machine does not go into the diagnostics routine but instead goes to the login screen after the key is released. Holding it for minutes seems to have no effect.
Only thing I can think of that might have bearing is that-- shortly after I purchased the machine I attempted to install Ubuntu dual boot and was unsuccessful with this. I ended up doing a system restore. Since then all updates have been done.
I did search here but did not find the diagnostics information for this model. Any help or suggestions would be deeply appreciated.
Warmest Regards
