Hardware Test doesn't work

I have the latest Macbook Pro. When I hold F2 to do a hardware test at boot, it does something different, goes black with a flashing gray dash, then turns off. Same thing happens with both OS X cds. Why doesn't it work? Onyx told me I needed to do a test.
 
OK, I think it was because it was running out of battery. Now it comes up with a flashing folder with a question mark on it. :S
