Hardwaregrowler not doing anything?

I've had it running for a couple weeks now....it starts up and sits in my dock, but I've never received any notifications from it (the one and only preference check box is checked to show notifications upon startup).

I plugged and ejected a USB stick several times this morning and nada....is there something else I need to do to actually get it to display messages?

This is on my iMac (specs in sig) and OS X 10.6.2
