I've been trying on out for the past few hours. SO far it seems really easy on the eyes!

Hello

Glorious ,

I used to use MAC M1, which has an XDR default display.

recently I purchased a Studio display which is lower quality than my M1 chip display, and I have a headache.....

my laptop M1Chip has XDR 1600 while the studio display is an "Apple display" "not XDR" with 600 N.

i decided that I would return the studio display to apple and order the XDR.

from my experience, if I use a display that is lower than my laptop, it causes me a headache and eye issues.

The Apple Studio Display is free from PWM flicker. It was the mean reason for me not to go for the LG Ultrafine and Dell Ultrasharp as those display do have PWM flickering.

I was able to find alternative 4K displays that were PWM flicker free, but then there were other issues, such as not being able to use the display via 1 USB-C cable for example.

I'm not sure if the reason is PWM or another thing.
As I said, the XDR is 60M pixels, while the studio display is 14M pixels.
So it may cause headaches for me but not for other users .
Thanks

Most people who get eye fatigue with displays get it due to PWM flickering, which the Apple Studio Display doesn't have. So the OP should be fine most likely.

The funny thing is, the XDR on the M1 machines do have PWM flickering. But it is at a very high frequency which shouldn't cause problems for most people.

I don't know why you have issues with the Apple Studio Display, but makes sense to return it if it caused problems for you.

Well, apple should work on adding the PWM to the next Studio displays!
Thank you again, and happy new year!

The Pro Display XDR has 20M pixels and has exactly the same pixel density as the Studio Display (218 PPI).
Am I to understand that the XDR display included with the M1 MBP is 60M while its 20M on the Pro Display XDR and 14M on the Studio Display? And neither the Studio Display nor the Pro XDR display have PWM? But the XDR display on the M1 MBP does have PWM? Is this correct?

I sure wish the extras like VESA mount etc didn't cost more with the Studio Display.

Every Apple display I've had on any device gave me eye strain and headaches except for devices that use vanilla LED like the MBA so I'm being very cautious with my next Apple display and computer purchase.

I'm thinking Mac Studio with Studio Display.

Nah, the number of pixels is simply multiplication of the horizontal by vertical resolution. All MBPs have significantly fewer pixels than a 5K display.

I’m not sure why, but the Apple Studio Display is great on my eyes with my MacBook Pro connected and AWFUL on my eyes when my iPad Pro is connected. I swear the refresh rate is being reduced or something when the iPad Pro is connected bc my eyes feel exactly like they did when I tried to use the iPhone 12 line of phones.

I wonder how it is with a Mac mini?
