Hello,

since a lot of us here are tinkers I thought I'd ask here...

Did someone ever try this adapter in any scenario? https://www.ebay.de/itm/385207167639?hash=item59b022ea97:g:MmUAAOSwb~Ja2UkU&amdata=enc:AQAHAAAAoBUjp4p1e7ubax/OUBM67U495bGizIXDYNNI/mKNrcEzGZOJkeksTOglUYQPNGSXvG/XdgzBisvhtpXn5eTHgznTEQyN9XVieiWg/M63+3DnaQYlQ0Pfn1RRp1jEhGn2EOnoklq/xZo7BeIpiBR882XR7Im9nmB5Lb1zsJZTEgk2YLl3CyAtml7XT+cGihNavOGr1Q1L/sS2uYG4v8UfMMc=|tkp:Bk9SR5SFof6wYQ

I already used mSATA to SATA or IDE Adapters in my ibook G4 and PowerMac G4 with success, but I also have two old microSATA SSDs (Kingston SSDNow V+180) laying around, which I plan to make use of one way or another, be it on an SATA-PCI card in my PowerMac or with an aditional SATA to IDE adapter on the onboard IDE port or at least in an external SATA enclosure...

Thanks a lot!

Yes, I used one of those years ago, for the exact same purpose you're considering now. My experience was not good, the adapter ran so hot I was afraid it might catch fire. It worked, but I decided it wasn't worth the risk of fire or the undoubtedly shortened service life of the equipment attached to either end. That adapter went off to recycling.

In trying to sleuth out the cause of that trouble, I made a discovery that might be useful to you: your Kingston SSDNow probably has an mSATA drive inside it. See the photos below, I took mine apart and discovered that it was in fact just a case and adapter for mSATA to Micro SATA. I've kept the empty SSDNow case to use as an mSATA-Micro SATA adapter, if I ever happen to need such a thing (it's been years now, and so far I haven't).

Anyway, crack it open and see what's in there. You'll void the warranty, if you happen to still have one - but oh well. If there's an mSATA in there, pop it out and use it just like you have your other mSATA drives. Much less trouble IMO.

@Raging Dufus Thank you very much! That is great Info! Sorry for appreciating your help so late!

I looked into my two. Took quiet some time to peel the warranty seal off... which isn't the reason I answer so late. :D

Seems they soldered it to the board in my case. It has Toshiba chips in it btw. Mine are both date code 1206 and assembled in Philippines. I can't see a D/C on your's.

Well, I guess I will order one of these cheap adapters, so I can at least read the SMART status (if the adapter allows this). I am planning to sell them then (without the adapter), I guess, since I can't use them myself securely with the adapter; or I have to think about how to cool them properly.

Meanwhile I was now thinking about using them with an additional adapter from SATA to IDE on the stock IDE-port of my Sawtooth or GE, since the SSDs are 128GB and there is the LBA limit of the IDE socket on the Logicboard anyway. (rather than using it on the Sonnet SATA card).

Shouldn't the big case fan nearby provide enough cooling?

On the other hand I researched prices for (used) 128GB microSATA SSDs on EBay and was quiet astonished that they go for prices from 30-45 EUR/USD/GBP, leaning more towards the 45,- end (Toshiba, Samsung and Lenovo), excluding shipping costs. They are a bit rare, but there is a Chinese supplier who sells no-brand ones for 39,-EUR new including shipping. Also a German seller offering Samsung items for crazy 85,- EUR.
This one might be the one I have inside my Kingston "enclosure" https://www.ebay.de/itm/175403587447?hash=item28d6de5777:g:HLUAAOSwhU1jEsIo&amdata=enc:AQAHAAAAoFsPX8q11ETIiCNquBjj8f0/bHSQZjhOQulw62rqOuXSRi8vBxSosjr+KM1xwelTurFaFE0cGsnZx8j38VwwGVOQJzJXpGjb1o6jklRKyIfla7c+KBwXIbUNa9aicce+Yu8/GSj3BKJpOHofy6Wow9OX7Hw4Q2p2D8WauAwJdKsq/XCQ9Og58M4ipqwc7Jf2vzucyuJHCFygRdblTHHuP5Q=|tkp:Bk9SR9b44_C9YQ

Considering that a new regular 128GB SATA SSD starts at ca. 15,- EUR, its tempting to just sell them and get new regular ones without those heat worries.

1.8” SSDs are crazily overpriced. Same as PATA ones. Unless you absolutely need/want one, there are cheaper options :)
