On macOS, the Mail app is super fast. I open it and within seconds it loads all 15 messages I received in the past several hours.

On my phone, I open the app, it says "Checking for mail" for almost a full minute and then it fails to load anything. It says "Updated at 7 AM" despite the fact that it's past 11 now and I just opened the Mail app. So I try again. "Checking for mail" for another thirty seconds, then finally it loads the messages. I feel like it never used to be this bad. I'm using a 13 Pro with iOS 16.1 and running both off the same home Wi-Fi.

Yes. The mail app to me is completely unusable. It has worked flawlessly since the first iPhone I had, 3G I think. And I think iOS 13 broke it, and it was fixed again in iOS 14, and its been broken since iOS 15. I have moved over to the Outlook app, some adjustment but I have gotten used to it. Maybe one of these days the default mail app will work right again.

Not to mention the fact you’ll read a message and it’ll remain unread. Or you’ll read a message, the notification dot will disappear, but it will still say (1) next to your inbox. And then once you go to unread tab, that message how magically has the bubble next to it.

I have switched back to the default mail app. And it is working good. I ran into a couple issues with the Outlook app handling of contacts and some appointments. So I took a chance on the mail app again because they offered new features like being able to recall an email and a few other things with iOS 16, and to my surprise it is working very good for me. I have not had any issues and I hope it stays working good.
