Has anyone had any luck with USB hubs?

2012 15" cMBP here. I'm not looking to power 4 or 5 different things, but my current rocketfish USB hub can't even power a single external HDD. Any recommendations for a USB hub?

Ive used many different ones and my top suggestions is the
Anker Uspeed USb 3.0 4 port hub.

There are couple other port options (4 being the smallest) and Ive used 4 port and 10.
They are both great USB hubs.

Does that work even without the external power? And if so, what's the difference? I didn't understand the description haha...

It depends what u intend to hook up to it. A 2.5"HD u *may* get away wo using external power but if ur having probs, most likely ext power is needed. There is no magic. laptop USB port can put out 1 amp the most.

Basically any of them that have an AC adapter would do the trick. Some may be able to power a single 2.5 drive, but most won't any none will power more than one.
