So technically, if you use the education discount for the MacBook Pro, you can choose from certain Beats products up to the $299 Solo 3's. If the product isn't part of the promotion you're not supposed to be able to exchange for it, or get a more expensive thing and pay the difference. Of course the Studio 3's are not part of the promotion, but I would love a more comfy headset and noise cancelling.

When I was buying my MBP, I was told I could do this swap, but I didn't choose to at the time because of ignorance of the difference between the headphones. However everything I hear now is it's not possible.

Just wondering if anyone has tried and had success with this?

Did any of you guys try talking to a manager or anything?

No but i don’t think it would matter anyway. All 3 times I was told it wasn’t up to any employee in store and that it had something to do with apples actual software. It flat out wasn’t capable of accepting such an exchange.

I just did this promo today. They charged me full price for the Solo3’s and reduced the price of the MBP the 299.95 that the Solo 3’s are.

The receipt also shows a return date for the Solo 3’s so I’m thinking if people do not want them they can just return them?

This is not correct I’m afraid.

If you return them you won't get any money back. You have to return both the MacBook and the Beats to get a full refund.

How are they handling returns where customers just want to exchange for a different MBP?
They will just deduct 300 off your refund. You will never receive a full refund if you don't return the Beats as well. When you exchange for new MacBook you could just keep the Beats, but you will never be able to make profit off of them.

Was just at the Apple Store for something else... can confirm they said last year they could but this year the system won't let them. Well, to Craigslist I go!

The in store systems don't let them do anything with these orders. I had a broken pair of Beats, they could not do a anything in store without my laptop in hand. They said the system would only let them process a return of the entire order, and then a re-sell of the order. It seems a bit ridiculous, because I ended up buying a set of Beats that I'm going to return just under the 14 day period, and the manager even encouraged it.

Edit: yeah never mind, won't be doing that lol

So this is kind of awful but could I return it to a different store and say it was a gift? Like it was bought at Apple, so I go to Best Buy and say it was a gift and I have no receipt. Could I get the full store credit for it?
lol

It depends on who you get at the Apple store. I went in when the MacBook pros first came out and bought a base 15in and the employee asked me if I wanted to upgrade to the studio3. I actually told him no. Half hour later I decided to return the laptop (unopened) with the solos because I wanted a MTO. My MTO came in a couple of days ago with my solos.

I went to the Apple store yesterday and asked them if I could pay $50 to upgrade to the studio3. The employee told me I couldn’t. I asked to talk to the manager and explained to him that I initially was told I could but I didn’t and returned the first MacBook because I wanted a MTO. He mentioned that this year Apple got rid of the upgrade to studio3 program. He said that because the initial employee told me I could upgrade, he would honor that.

I got my studio3’s.

I’m actually from what it appears the minority in here.

I like my Solo 3’s. Coming from Bose QC 25’s I have not had enough time with the Solo’s to comment sound quality wise, however having a wireless pair of headphones has been liberating.

Things like letting the dog out, grabbing something from kitchen etc don’t require me to take my headphones off. This seems like a moot point, but let me tell you when I’m listening to a stimulating podcast it’s a huge plus not having to pause in the middle of it.

So for me, I have my Bose for noise cancelation when needed or preferred and I now have my Beats for lounging around the house cord free.

Ya I'd just prefer the Studio 3 wireless even more. Then you get everything you get with the Solo's, plus an over-ear design that doesn't give you a headache over time, and noise canceling. Only 50 bucks more - but it just doesn't seem possible to pull it off because of Apple's systems this year.

Didn’t need the headphones but instead of ebaying, decided to get rosegold and gifted to wife for some brownie points:)
