It's a piece of software that installs without consent and runs in the background despite any good reason for needing to do so.

Amen, there is no reason, even if you were given the option I could live with it.

It runs with root permissions.
There's no option to turn it off.
If you uninstall it, it gets reinstalled.

Those are all problems for me, so I have no Google software installed on my machines.
