I just found out the Samsung Gear 360 camera is selling for $75 on Amazon. I have the new FCPX which is supposed to be able to edit 360 video.

What do I need. Just the camera?

I don't know anything about 360 video is there is web site with the basics? I have all the beginner questions that needs to be answered like is the video format standardized? How to record the video what is needed to connect a VR headset?

Neverhaving made one of these I assume the main problem to be solved is getting the camera operator out of the shot. What do you do, start the camera then run away and hide?

Maybe mount the camera on a helmet mounted mast?

From a story telling point of view. I've no clue. How do you cut the film?

Links would be great.

I promise to report back and summarize

Do you have an HMD? To connect something like the Vive you need a video port on your Mac (Most HMD's that I know of use HDMI, so you'll need display port -> HDMI or something) and then also USB.
Format is not standardised as far as I know, but similar to other video format, FCPX just handles it all.

I don't know about the Gear, but a lot of VR cameras don't go literally all the way around. They maybe go 270° so you can still stand behind it. But if it literally is all the way, then yeah, start it, run away and edit out the beginning and end when you're done.

The Samsun Gear 360 (2016 model) is selling for $70 on Amazon. It creates a true "sphere" that wraps completely around in all directions. It covers the sky directly over head and even captures the tripod used to hold the camera. It is a truly complete sphere.

It shoots 4K video at 30 FPS and stores this in a micro SD card. The Mac does not need any special ports or cables. You move the SD card from the camera to the Mac to import the video.

I don't know how to make a drama or documentary video in 360 or VR. Most peoples these to record an event or a scenic location or for Realestate sales.
