You have to take over the account, not the plan. I have had success (about three months ago) doing this in store. Apparently it has not been possible online for some time now, though. In store you may get lucky.

Basically. You can change the number after the fact (just not to the one you are currently using, but a different one). Then you would have to cancel your current account (or end up paying for two accounts)
