I saw this article a little while ago explaining the Apple Store's new self-checkout using the Apple Store app. Basically you can buy accessories (not Macs/iPods/iPhones/iPads) at the Apple Store by scanning them with your iPhone and paying with your credit card number right away by yourself.

The part I found interesting was:
According to our source, self-checkout purchases will be charged via the Apple Store app to the customer's iTunes Store account.

I saw the question asked a few times but still haven't seen an answer yet:

Can you use your existing iTunes balance towards buying those accessories, or does it bill directly to your associated credit card?

I still have a 100$ iTunes card that came with a Mac and would rather use this app to buy accessories for it at the Apple Store than spend the 100$ on digital content.

I made a purchase a few weeks ago with the app. I had enough credit to cover the purchase, but the payment defaulted to my credit card. I wonder if it would've gone through if I didn't have a credit card associated with my iTunes account?
