So I've had my Apple ID (now called an "Apple Account") for a few years, but due to spam and a few other issues I would like to start fresh with a brand new @icloud.com email, and at the same time use it to create a new Apple ID/Apple Account.

I've done this a few times over the years for the same reasons - each time I will delete my old Apple ID, so I never have more than one Apple ID in use in case Apple have a limit.

Today I went to icloud.com and tried to create a new Apple ID. It didn't offer me the chance to create a @icloud.com email at the same time - it just asks me to put in any other email (e.g. gmail, yahoo). If I try to write a new icloud.com email that I know is available, it says "cannot use @icloud.com".

I've tried looking on the Apple website, tried creating a new account through the Mail app, tried signing out etc but still the same.

Has Apple changed it so that you can't create a new icloud.com email if you have an existing icloud.com Apple Account?

Or am I missing something?

Thanks

Yeah, you can only do it from an Apple device. Look for the "Don't have an email address?" link/button when trying to create one from your iPhone or iPad, or "Get a free iCloud email address..." when you create one from your Mac (have to sign out of iCloud first).

Even if you don't use @icloud.com as your Apple Account, you should still be able to set up an @icloud email address later. (This is what I've done.)

Out of curiosity, do you basically just abandon your old Apple Account and start using a new one? You must not have any purchases tied to it, or how does that work? And how do you get the rest of your data (photos, contacts, bookmarks, passwords, notes, calendars, reminders, etc.) transferred over?

Btw, once you get this figured out, maybe start looking into using an email alias instead. You can delete the alias when you no longer want it and then can just create another alias to use, rather than having to create a whole new Apple account. (Could probably do this now by creating a rule that deletes everything that comes to your current/primary address and create an alias to start using.)

Coincidentally, I'm also attempting to create a new Apple Account today. I'm running into similar difficulties.
