I've considered buying a 17" mbp (current gen) to replace my 13" MBP but was put off by the lack of control over the auto-switching graphics. Ie. no way to disable the discrete or manually switch.

This was 4-5 months ago. I tried searching to see if Apple addressed those issues but havent found anything.

Has there been any updates?

yes, there is an app called gfxcardstatus that sits in your menu bar and allows you to force it into using nvidia or intel graphics. it's been out for a while.

All that app does is display what card you are on, though, right? Doesnt give you the ability to lock the nvidia from kicking on (or vice versa)
Wrong

You can also try GPUInfoMenu. It basically does the same thing, but instead of the "i/g" in the menubar, it displays intel/nvidia logo.
