No, I can confirm that it hasn't been fixed. Use the same method -

defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 2

It's a bit of a shame really.
 
hmm. subpixel rendering isn't working. no colors around letters when i zoom in. only grayscale. can anyone help? working ok on macbook pro, but not on mac pro with external LG monitor attached.

Same issue for me !

Just bought a new mac mini core i5 with the Radeon graphic chip (to replace my 2 years old mac mini C2D and nvidia 9400 chip).

Connected on the same LCD, a dell U2410 (with the same input : display port), i immediately noticed that the rendering of the fonts in Safari was awful compared to what it was before (and compared to what i have with my MBP Pro C2D connected on the same LCD).

So, where's the problem ? OS X Lion or the RADEON chip ?
