It had been lying in the cupboard for a while, I fully charged it six months ago or so. Anyway I wanted to get some old stuff off the drive and so I hit the power-on button. Nothing. So I plugged in the charging cable and tried again. This time a chime, but the screen stays dark, and magsafe is indicating with its little light that the battery is charging. We’re now 30 minutes in, and the fans are spinning and the machine is quite hot, but any attempts to power it up have been unsuccesful, the keyboard and power button don’t do anything.

I was under the impression Macs can run off the charger while the battery is being recharged, even if it’s lost power.

Should I be worried? Bring it in for repair?

Ten second press-and-hold on the power button, fans shut down, normal press on power and it boots!
