I am a .Mac member and... being the owner of only one Mac computer, well I could clearly live without it.
After looking for a good replacement, I wanted to share with you the best options that I have found.
Email and host
I pay a few buck a year for a personal domain which provides IMAP
Advantage: pure domain, flexible management, personal email, cheaper
Inconvenient: If any, it will require PHP/MySQL support
Gallery
On my host I have installed Gallery2, a free php gallery software which provides a .Mac theme (see thread and download)
Advantage: customizable gallery, open-source, faster, cheaper, hosted on your domain.
Inconvenient: No mobile uoloading
File storage
In addition I just switched from the iDisk to Dropbox which is fully integrated into the Finder and give 5gigs for free for testers. it runs very well. Be sure to check out the demo.
Advantage: faster, no local cache copy, cheaper
Inconvenient: 5 gigs (?), currently in beta: waiting for more features (check out the forum), Files stored on a different host.
Bookmark Sync
For Firefox bookmark syncing I use Foxmarks version 1 which runs smoothly with my personal host (I had problems with the latest release).
Advantage: Firefox users will love it
Inconvenient: only backup solution, no web based access (except if you use the Foxmarks server)
